About the Chapel   back to top

The Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel was designed in 1976 to meet the needs of the university, as well as the local community. The primary function of the Chapel is to offer a place of worship to all faiths. In addition to accommodating religious services, the chapel a glass, brick and wood structure, also serves as an attractive setting for lectures, musical and theatrical performances, and small meetings.

Designed with double aisle seating focused on a small raised dais with seating capacity of 200 people, the Rogers Chapel is illuminated by a wall of windows overlooking the beautiful ancient oaks, azaleas and camellias in the Newcomb Hall front yard. An adjacent private courtyard provides an attractive setting for intimate outdoor receptions.

The understated beauty of the chapel offers a tranquil setting to the various groups who meet here. Vaulted beamed ceilings highlighted by a skylight and a northern wall of glass casts soft natural light to the chapel. Four tiered seating is arranged in three sections focusing on the oak floored dais.

Musical instruments permanently housed within the chapel include a grand piano and a Schantz Pipe Organ. The organ, a twelve rank, two manual instrument, was built in 1977 by the Schantz Organ Company of Orville, Ohio. It is designed in the "new baroque" tradition.

Art   back to top

Opened in 1976, the Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel invokes many memories of the former Newcomb Chapel originally located on the Washington Avenue Campus until 1918. Most prominent among these is the rose window, designed in the 189 4 by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) at the request of the Josephine Louise Newcomb.

Approximately six feet in diameter, the work is centered around the initials of Harriott Sophie Newcomb, in monogram form, and features an intricate Celic pattern, in dark blue, red, green, and gold.

Three additional Tiffany windows enhance the lobby, as does a wooden angel, carved from part of the ceiling beams from the original 1895 Chapel. The three windows include a stained glass portrayal of King David, St. Cecilia, and the G ood Samaritan.

A detailed outline of the city of Jerusalem sets off the background of the Good Samaritan, while a molded glass lily creates a three-dimensional detail to the St. Cecilia window. The faces of King David, the Good Samaritan and St.Cecil ia are all reflected by hand painted strokes, adding exquisite detail and depth to the windows.

Using three to five layers of glass, Louis Comfort Tiffany incorporated many unique techniques of glass design into these works of art. The result is a visual masterpiece of depth, detail, and style. As light shines through the windo ws, one feels drawn into the dimension of each piece, whether it is the hand-molded glass velvet folds of St. Cecilia's robe or the iron strings of King David's harp. Cast and chunk glass jewels add further ornamental elements and detail to the windows.

Two of the Tiffany windows were donated by Josephine Louise Newcomb in memory of her husband, and her mother, Mary Sophia LeMonnier. The third window was donated by Mr. Newcomb's family to memorialize his nephew and namesake, Warren N ewcomb Smith.

A fourth window in the lobby, partially crafted by Tiffany, contains an art nouveau depiction of the fountain and administration building on the Washington Avenue Newcomb Campus.
