For Students - Why Engage in Research

Every field of study has its own research problems - questions to be answered - solutions to be found! As a researcher you seek answers and gain a deeper understanding of what you have learned in the classroom. Along the way, you will meet new people and develop new skills. Research experiences vary. You may develop your own question and select your method of studying your topic. Or, you may work as part of a team of researchers under the direction of a faculty member. However your experience is structured, research is a great growth experience!

By doing research and creative activity, you will:

    • Challenge yourself to work toward high goals.
    • Learn more about your likes and dislikes.
    • Help refine your career plans.
    • Meet other students who share your interests and passions.
    • Learn how to work as a member of a team.
    • Develop a mentored relationship with one or more University faculty members, who will share insights into what it is like being a member of a research community.
    • Strengthen your record of achievement in support of a job application.
    • Strengthen your record of achievement in support of an application to graduate or professional school.
    • Develop your analytical skills and problem solving skills.
    • Begin to see research problems in everyday life.
    • Complete an honors thesis or capstone project to top off your undergraduate career.
    • Make a contribution to the collective knowledge of humanity.
