Alena Skaria

I am currently a junior studying Biomedical Engineering and I reside from Mundelein, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago. Formerly, I was a research assistant for an Evolutionary Biology lab at Tulane University, helping quantify taxonomic and ecological diversity of freshwater fishes found in the Mississippi River. In addition, I worked for the pharmaceutical and medical device company, Fresenius Kabi, as an intern of Regulatory Affairs. Currently, my research interests focus on noninvasive therapeutic approaches for neurological diseases and cancer. I am beginning to engage in a research project in which I help to explore the possible benefits of focused ultrasound to stimulate nerve growth and to treat spinal cord injury.

As a student who has moved to New Orleans, it would be taboo to say that I don't enjoy the unique food experiences offered in such a food-centric city. That being said, my hobbies include trying and cooking new foods, as well as exploring all the unique facets that a big city has to offer. In addition, I enjoy being outside as I have dabbled in hiking recently, but I also take a large interest in watching movies when staying indoors seems more fit.
