This page contains the class syllabus, information about observing sessions and the fall sky in general, plus many links to astronomy resources, including my own astronomy homepage . We will make extensive use of Blackboard for communication and posting of grades.

• ASTRONOMY 100 SYLLABUS

• The class meets Tuesday AND Thursday from 5:30 to 6:45. Observing sessions will generally be held on Tuesdays, staring about 45 minutes after sunset.

  The observatory is on the roof of Jones Hall, Room 401. Take the stairs or the elevator to the 3rd floor and follow the signs.

  
  

  We will also have at least one afternoon session for solar observation sometime during the course.

Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Go to "Visual Tools," Finding chart", and put in the following parameters: ra: 185, dec: 5.5, 2"/pix, width: 1024, height: 1024, then click "get image." Scroll around. This is in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Then try other values, espcially near dec=0 to 15 deg and ra=120 to 240 deg (8h to 16h). After going to Finding Chart, try "Navigate," first zooming down to get a large field. Another Virgo field: ra=187.5, dec=13.0, containing M87; or 187.5, 12.4.

Mars was at opposition (closest approach to Earth) on August 27,2003, the distance being less than 35,000,000 miles. The next opposition,another good one, will be in the fall of 2005.
