NEW! PUBLIC OBSERVING AT THE TULANE OBSERVATORY

OUR FACEBOOK PAGE "Tulane University Observatory" WILL BE UPDATED MORE REGULARLY THAN THIS WEB PAGE.

The Tulane Observatory will be open for public viewing on the first wednesday of each month, weather permitting, through May. If this is successful, the program will resume in the fall.

UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW!

Our first public viewing on March 2 was almost too successful, and we had to herd people past the telescope awfully quickly. Perhaps things will improve in due course. Having announced a first wednesday schedule, I want to change that, without too much confusion, I hope.

We will try to be more flexible, since astronomical events are not confined to wednesdays. We will schedule one session to correspond to the first-quarter moon, an early morning session in May to view Saturn, and a daytime session to see the transit of Mercury on May 9. More details in a week or so.

Meet on the third floor of Jones Hall (across from Howard Tilton Library. Follow the "observatory" signs.

The next public session will be on Wednesday, May 4 at 8:30 p.m. Again, we will concentrate on viewing Jupiter. There will also be a 2:30 a.m. session later that night (early Thursday) to view Mars and Saturn. Access to Jones Hall will be tricky at that hour, and you will probably have to enter through the side door opposite the Fogelman Arena. I will contact security about this. If you don't like the 2:30 idea, Saturn will be better placed when we resume having sessions in early September.

We will also observe the transit of Mercury on Monday morning, May 9, from 8 to 11 a.m.

Again, try to use our facebook page "tulane university observatory", as this web site will be phased out.
