Newsgroups list

Click on any of the highlighted newsgroup names to participate in an on-going discussion on that topic. Many of these newsgroups are frequented by experts who are only too happy to answer any and all questions you might have about subjects in their field. Be careful though: always consider the course when reading a reply.

There is also something called Netiquette, an informal set of rules governing how and where to post messages.

If you don't know your Netiquette (and even if you think you do) please visit the following groups first:

news.announce.newusers
Regular postings of incredibly useful information for newbies. READ, READ, READ!
news.newusers.questions
The only problem with this group is that there are a superfluity of questioners and a dearth of answerers--for the obvious reason that experts don't frequent a newusers group. But a few kind souls do just that and make this group worth visiting.

WARNING! Most newgroups are unmoderated and anyone can post anything they want. You will most certainly find strong language wherever you go. See our Caveat for further information.

Newsgroups

alt.discrimination
This is the place to debate affirmative action. If you sift through all the noise, there's some real information here.
alt.current-events.bosnia
Posters to this group include Bosnians and Serbs living in war torn areas of the Former Yugoslavia. Ongoing debates about `ethnic cleansing.' See also misc.news.bosnia for recent articles and news releases.
alt.society.civil-liberty
There's a lot of talk here that could go in alt.politics.nationalism.white (See below) but it's also the place to discuss the Constitution, Freedom of Speech, and the legal aspects of Affirmative Action and other issues.
soc.culture.african
This is a good place to discuss current events, African history: alot of conversation between native-born Africans and African-Americans.
soc.culture.african.american
Threads on this newsgroup when I visited included inter-racial adoption, inter-racial dating, what it means to be 'black', and a request for info on Marcus Garvey.
soc.history
What is the origin of the southern accent? Who shot the nose off the Sphinx? And the burning question on everyone's mind: Lizzie Borden, guilty or innocent? This seems to be great place to hang around if you like your current events well done!
soc.history.moderated
A sanctuary from name-calling, spamming, and irrelevant postings. Some nice person looks at each message before posting it. I don't know what their criteria are for posting, but if your message doesn't belong on the group list, they will email you and let you know why. Did someone say 'spam'?
soc.history.war.world-war-ii
There are a lot of cross-postings here from alt.revisionism and soc.culture.jewish.holocaust, for obvious reasons. It's also the place to ask more general questions about WWII.
soc.culture.jewish
This group is relatively free of real anti-semitic traffic. Posters concentrate on questions relating more specifically to aspects of Jewish culture. One of the few truly international lists on the net with posters from around the world.
soc.culture.jewish.holocaust
Of course revisionists creep into the discussion, but this is also the place for Holocaust survivors and Holocaust historians to share what they know.

Newsgroups on controversial subjects relating to bigotry

alt.conspiracy
As much a forum for humor as for serious discussion, topics range from the O.J. Simpson Trial to the so-called 'International Jewish Conspiracy.'
alt.politics.nationalism.white
If you've been feeling stressed out lately, light some incense, find a nice quiet place and DON'T READ THIS NEWSGROUP! For those of you willing to brave it, you'll find more overt anti-semitism and racism than you ever thought possible. And you'll meet the hardy souls who frequent this group just to combat the bigotry being advocated.
alt.politics.white-power
So much cross-posting goes on between this and alt.politics.nationalism.white that they are mostly the same group.
alt.revisionism
Holocaust Experts go head-to-head with 'revisionists' in a discussion of Nazi genocide. Some say revisionists shouldn't be dignified with a response. Others say their ideas need to be exposed as lies.
talk.politics.guns
An open forum on gun-control and gun-ownership, this newsgroup also attracts lively debates about the Militia movement, and conspiracy theories of all sorts.

The Coalition have tried to give a good overview of these newsgroups, but if you think I misrepresented any group's raison d'être, please let me know. Did I leave out a really great group? Just click here and let us know.
