Assignment 1 -- Preliminary Groundwork for Developing a Database Application Project: Identification of Potential Projects

Due date: September 18th, before the start of class.

Value: 30 points of 200 for Assignments.

Join with one or two other members of the class to form a work group for the Assignments and the Project required for this course. (Two or three member groups only.)

For Assignment 1, EACH STUDENT must complete all parts; if you have formed a three student group, then you will need to produce the following items three times. (For example, one student may choose "ABC Widgets" another may choose "American Red Cross" and the third may choose "XYZ Beer Distributors."

For some businesses or other organizations that you think would need a database management system (application), each student writes a "preliminary overview":

  1. name of the business or organization
  2. product, product line, or service
  3. some major corporate functions
  4. some business processes
  5. any existing computer applications
  6. some major data entity types ("high level")
  7. some needs or problems that are to be addressed by developing a new database application
  8. some ways employees and managers will use the potential new database application.
Do NOT write lengthy business plans or annual reports; just write 6 to 8 paragraphs for each of your chosen businesses or organizations.

Note: you may not use any business/organizations and functions based on customers/orders/order details, nor business/organizations and functions based on courses/students/departments, nor business/organizations and functions based on hospitals/patients; these are business/organizations and functions used in copious sample exercises by the textbook.

Each student chooses a business or organization with which he/she is somewhat familiar. Perhaps you held a part-time job there once, or you are working there as an intern, or you have learned something about it because you want to work there, or you found it on the internet/web, or you just buy things there.

Insert your completed, printed work into your portfolio. Make sure your portfolio is properly identifed with your name. Turn in your portfolio at or before the due date/time.
