Tulane Recycling: Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tulane recycle plastics?
Plastic recycling is now available at the residence halls on the Uptown campus, as well as through grounds containers that collect both plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Where does my recycling go? Is it really recycled?
Glass – All clear glass recycled at Tulane goes directly to the Tulane Glass Studio
Paper & Cardboard – Paper goes to SP Recycling in Elmwood, then on to paper mills in the Southeast.
Aluminum Cans – The aluminum cans are all taken to Uptown Recycling to be recycled.
Plastic, Mixed Plastic Bottles & Aluminum Cans – Allied Waste in Metairie accepts, sorts and sells our plastic bottles.

I live off campus. How can I recycle?
City-Wide Drop Offs Organized by the Department of Sanitation, the Recycling Foundation from Baton Rouge has been coming to New Orleans quarterly to collect recyclables from residents and take them back to Baton Rouge to be recycled. Phoenix Recycling offers curbside recycling to New Orleans residents for a fee of $15/month.

I live on campus. How can I recycle? What can I recycle?
Most residence halls have outdoor recycling stations where you can recycle aluminum cans, plastic, paper (including newspaper, magazines, office paper and colored paper) and clear glass. Mayer, Willow and Wall have a recycling/trash room on each floor, where you recycle aluminum cans and paper in these bins.

I work at Tulane. How can I recycle? What can I recycle?
Most academic and office buildings on the uptown campus have a paper toter location somewhere in the building. You may request a desk side recycling bin from recycle@tulane.edu to collect your paper, and then you take your paper to the paper toter most convenient to your location. There are also outside grounds containers for mixed plastic bottle & aluminum can recycling. Look for the blue containers in the mesh baskets, next to garbage containers in high-traffic areas.

Does the custodial staff take my recycling?
Academic/Office Buildings – No, the custodial staff is not responsible for taking your recycling. It is your job to take your recycling to one of the paper toters in your building. Click here for a list of paper toter locations.

Mayer/Willow/Wall – Once you take your recyclables to the recycling rooms located on every floor, the custodians will take your recyclables down to a centralized recycling pick up spot where they will then be picked up by the recycling staff.

All other residence halls – You are in charge of taking your recyclables to your dorm’s outdoor recycling station.

What happened to recycling of colored glass?
The Tulane Glass Studio, which uses our recycled glass, has been overwhelmed by contributions of glass from the residence halls and the larger community. They have more than enough brown and green glass to last the year. Even nationally, glass is becoming an increasingly difficult material to recycle. We need some local entrepreneurs to create some good uses for it!
