Joint Major in Economics and Business

Undergraduates enrolled in the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University may take additional economics electives and earn the equivalent of an economics major through a unique arrangement between the Department of Economics and the Freeman School. Economics major requirements are met by substituting economics courses for two of the five management electives and by taking economics courses for all three of the liberal arts electives. Interested students should consult the BSM Program Coordinator and the Chair of the Department of Economics early in the junior year. The Department of Economics will issue certificates upon graduation to those students who have successfully fulfilled the requirements for the major. Specific requirements include:

  • Economics 101
  • Economics 102
  • Economics 301 (or 303) - passed with a grade no lower than C-
  • Economics 302 - passed with a grade no lower than C-
  • Statistics requirement
  • Four additional economics courses, two of which must be completed at the 400 level or above.

The statistics requirement can be satisfied by completing either Economics 323, Mathematics 301, or the combination of Mathematics 111 and 112.

Students should also note that Economics 323 may be counted as one of the four additional economics courses required for the major.
