Gaurav Desai is Chair of the Department of English and has a joint appointment in the Program of African and African Diaspora Studies at Tulane University. He is the author of Subject to Colonialism: African Self-fashioning and the Colonial Library (Duke University Press, 2001) and co-editor of Postcolonialisms: An Anthology of Cultural Theory and Criticism (Rutgers University Press and Berg Press, 2005). He has also served as guest editor of special issues of journals on topics such as “Culture and the Law,” “Multi-Ethnic Literatures and the Idea of Social Justice,” and “Actually Existing Colonialisms.” In addition to book chapters in edited volumes, his articles have appeared in journals such as Cultural Critique, Boundary 2, Representations, Research in African Literatures and Genders. Gaurav is the recipient of a fellowship from the National Humanities Center, an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities to participate in a Summer Institute, a Rockefeller residency at the Bellagio Center in Italy, and a visiting fellowship at Clare Hall, Cambridge University of which he is now a Life Member. At Tulane he has served among other positions, on the School of Liberal Arts Promotions and Tenure Committee, on the Faculty Senate and has been the Faculty Representative to the Board of Administrators.
