Nghana Lewis holds a joint position in English and African & African Diaspora Studies at Tulane. Her areas of expertise include 19th and 20th Century American Literature; African American Expressive Culture, broadly conceived; Law and Education; and Critical Race Theory. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the ESSENCE Program, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that develops K-12 curriculum centered on local culture. Currently, Dr. Lewis is completing a book-length study of the disconnect between the force of legal precedent in resolving issues of race and racial identity and humanist approaches to racial analysis. She is also developing an interventionist model for filling gaps in minority youths' understanding of the relationships between hip hop culture and the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
