Graduate Program

Admissions Procedure

Applications are available online for electronic submission or downloading here.  Some materials must be sent directly to the Director of Graduate Studies:  see the particulars for the program to which you are applying (4+1 Program, M.A. Program).

Applications for the 4+1 program are handled differently than the M.A. program. Only students who are invited to apply will be eligible. Students will be invited to apply to the 4+1 program in spring of their junior year. For 4+1 students, decisions are made on the basis of the application form, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and a writing sample.  The deadlines for the submission of 4+1 applications will appear in the invitation letter.

For M.A. students, decisions are made on the basis of the application form, statement of purpose, transcripts, the GRE (Verbal, Quantitative), GPA, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample of 10-15 pages. An undergraduate degree in some field of literary studies is expected. Applicants are usually contacted in mid-spring about admissions.

Transfer Credit

Although rare, up to 12 hours (4 courses) of credit for graduate work taken elsewhere may be counted toward the M.A. degree.

Tuition

Students entering the 4+1 program pay a reduced tuition in their final year, set by the University. Students entering the M.A.
program pay regular tuition as specified by the School of Liberal Arts.
