KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) began in 1994 when two teachers, Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, launched a fifth-grade public school program in Houston, TX, after completing their commitment to Teach For America. In 1995, Feinberg remained in Houston to lead KIPP Academy Middle School, and Levin returned home to New York City to establish KIPP Academy in the South Bronx. These two original KIPP Academies became the starting place for a growing network of schools that are transforming the lives of students in under-resourced communities and redefining the notion of what is possible in public education.
KIPP New Orleans Schools currently supports five schools and 1,300 students, including the two highest performing open enrollment schools in the city. Most recently, KIPP New Orleans Schools opened KIPP Renaissance High School, its first high school, and KIPP New Orleans Leadership Academy, its fourth middle school. Each school's leader and staff have the authority and autonomy to make decisions that are in the best interests of students and individual schools involve families and their communities in a myriad of meaningful ways.
The Freeman Consulting Group has been engaged by KIPP New Orleans to assist in addressing questions surrounding teacher and administrative compensation strategies. FCG will do a “deep dive” into charter school compensation practices both locally and nationally. The deliverable for this project will be a comprehensive document which presents our research findings and if appropriate, our recommendations. Our ultimate goal is the have the results of our research published in a national publication so other charter school management organizations may benefit from our findings. While this project is expected to have a duration of less than a year FCG hopes to develop a lasting relationship with KIPP New Orleans and assist them with more projects in the future.
