Aid for Summer Session

General Information and Requirements
Tulane University provides federal self-help funds (loans and work-study) to eligible students enrolled during the summer; institutional scholarship funds are not awarded to student enrolled during the summer.

To be considered for federal aid, students must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress according to the standards of the division in which they are enrolled and they must not exceed the maximum timeframe for their anticipated degree.

In addition, one of the following must apply for students who are interested in financial aid during Summer 2008:

  • Student has applied for and been eligible for aid through the Financial Aid Office for 2007-2008
  • Student has applied for aid through the the Financial Aid Office for 2008-2009 and have been determined to be eligible.

If neither of the above applies, the student is not eligible for federal aid during the summer term.

When to Apply
Students must submit the appropriate Tulane University Summer Addendum (available from the Financial Aid Office in mid-April 2008), no later than June 15, 2008. Students may also electronically download the appropriate Summer Addendum once they become available:

  • The regular Summer Addendum for courses taken through Tulane-sponsored summer courses
  • The Summer Abroad Addendum for courses taken through Tulane-sponsored Summer Abroad programs
  • The Graduate Summer Addendum

Students must also submit the following documents by this deadline:

  • Undergraduates (except University College students) must complete or have completed the College Scholarship Service's PROFILE and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for either the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 academic year.
  • University College students and graduate and professional students must complete or have completed the FAFSA for either the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 academic year.

Available Aid Programs

Federal Perkins Loans
Federal Perkins funding for the summer is very limited and may not be available for summer periods. To be eligible for a summer Perkins loan, students must have been enrolled during the 2007-2008 academic year and they also must be registered for summer course work.

Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study funding for the summer is very limited, and applications for Federal Work-Study certification are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are restricted to working a maximum of 40 hours per week.

To be eligible for Federal Work-Study, no summer enrollment is required, although courses may be taken. If a student does not plan to enroll during the upcoming 2008-2009 academic year, the student must have been enrolled during the preceding academic year 2007-2008 and enroll during the 2008 summer session and be graduating at the end of summer 2008. In this case, the summer employment cannot extend beyond the period of summer enrollment. If a student will be enrolled during the 2008-2009 academic year, enrollment in the 2007-2008 academic year is not a consideration for eligibility.

Summer federal work study eligibility is subject to the deadlines and processing requirements of the Financial Aid Office and to the final approval of the Tulane Career Center (phone 504.865.5107, website Hiretulanegrads.com). In addition, please note that additional paperwork from the Tulane Career Center noting approval of the employer and position is required before you may begin any off-campus job.

Federal Work-Study Savings Expectations
Federal law has made the savings expectation from summer Federal Work Study earnings quite stringent. This is due to the severe restrictions placed on summer expense allowances for many students. The allowable costs are limited because the Federal Methodology already provides for the summer living expenses of the student, and dependents, if any, in the calculation of the student (and parents' if the student is dependent) contribution for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Based on federal law, 2008 summer expense allowances for undergraduate and graduate students will be determined as follows:

  • Enrolled for no summer courses at Tulane: standard local transportation for the period of employment.
  • Enrolled less than half-time at Tulane: tuition, books, and standard local transportation for the period of employment.
  • Enrolled at least half-time at Tulane: tuition, books, room, board, and miscellaneous for the period of enrollment and standard transportation for the period of enrollment as well as the period of employment.
  • Dependent students who will not work in the same area where their parents live are allowed room, board, and miscellaneous costs for the period of employment in addition to the allowances noted above.

The total amount of your Federal Work Study earnings less these allowable expenses will be expected as a contribution toward 2008-2009 academic year costs. (A higher contribution would be expected from students who have other resources, including a parent contribution for dependent students, to meet all or a portion of these allowable expenses for summer.) If you do not enroll, the contribution from your summer Federal Work Study earnings cannot be less than $100.00. Please note, the expected contribution from summer Federal Work Study is in addition to the income contribution predicted for 2008-2009, which is also calculated according to the Federal Methodology.

Because of the restrictions noted above, students should consider carefully whether summer Federal Work Study employment is advantageous to them. Should you be unable to earn the expected amount of Federal Work Study certification, you may request (in writing) reconsideration of your 2008-2009 academic year aid package after fall registration. Any increases in your aid package would be in the form of self-help (loan and/or work study) and would be on a funds available basis.

Federal Stafford Loans
Students who have not borrowed the maximum allowable for the year may be eligible to apply for additional funds to cover tuition, books, and living expenses for the period of enrollment. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (see note below) at Tulane University, must meet the academic requirements of the school or college, and must demonstrate need for the loan. Students who do not meet the need requirement for a subsidized Stafford Loan may be eligible for an unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

Additional Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
Graduate and professional and independent undergraduate applicants may borrow additional unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan funds up to the annual loan limit for this program or cost of attendance for the summer, whichever is less. Although students must complete the standard appication process, it is not necessary that the student show need.

(Note: Half-time enrollment for summer is based on one-half the academic year full-time standard. To be considered enrolled half-time, an undergraduate student must enroll for a minimum of two courses that equal at least six hours in any one, or any combination, of the summer session. Half-time varies for graduate students depending on the academic year full-time standard for the division.)

Important Facts for Financial Aid Applicants
Students who were not enrolled in a regular degree program at Tulane during the 2007-2008 academic year, or will not be enrolled during the 2008-2009 academic year, are not eligible to apply for federal financial aid funds through Tulane.

Because the summer sessions are so short, students should allow sufficient time for all processing to be completed and the loan to be disbursed while they are still enrolled at least half-time. Federal law prohibits the release of loan funds to students who are not registered at least half-time or who are not meeting other requirements of the program at the time of disbursement.
