Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am pleased to report that Promise and Distinction: The Campaign for Tulane is officially a success. As of June 30, 2008, we have raised more than $730.5 million, or 104.4% of our total goal.

Any way you look at it this campaign was a success. We have truly achieved our goal of elevating the stature of the university, and the best is yet to come!

Increasing the university endowment to $1 billion a year ahead of schedule was a particularly exciting and historic achievement. Ultimately, more than $297 million of the campaign total was earmarked for endowment - providing support for chairs, professorships, scholarships, fellowships, research, travel and internship funds, athletics, libraries and collections. Income from the endowment secures our future and strengthens our academic core by enabling us to attract and retain the highest caliber students and faculty.

The campaign support for restricted programs was incredible. Our goal of $150 million was achieved, exceeded and then some, with more than $238 million coming in for educational and research programs in areas of current and emerging strength. Much of this support was dedicated to new programs created to transform the community through strategic partnerships pioneering new models for education reform and civic engagement.

The Tulane Fund was a big winner, too, with over $101 million raised in unrestricted support. These funds provide critical and immediate operating support and budget relief for the people, programs and facilities that constitute Tulane.

There was strong support for facilities totaling $93.5 million. These capital funds are dedicated to enhancing the residential living experience and expanding and improving the functionality of existing facilities. The Lavin Bernick Center for University Life and Turchin Stadium are high profile monuments to our success, but there is so much more than that.

More than anything, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support. Every gift made a difference. Your gift ensured our success. Our vision of Promise and Distinction is a reality. It is our story of the spirit of philanthropy against all odds.

I hope you will join us on October 3-4, 2008 for a weekend celebration of all that is Tulane including a Town Hall Meeting with President Scott Cowen, Parent Family Weekend, class reunion activities, Tulane vs. Army at Tad Gormley Stadium and our 2nd annual ALL ALUMNI REUNION EXTRAVAGANZA - WAVE ’08.

Meet your friends and classmates October 3rd for the WAVE ’08 Reunion Party at 6 p.m. in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life, followed by a concert with the FUNKY METERS on the Quad at 8 p.m. For a complete schedule of events visit reunions.tulane.edu

It’s our way of saying thank you, again and again!

Awards

The Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award for the Talented

We are happy to announce 2008 is the fifth year for this very different award at Tulane University – The Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award for the Talented.  Open to any member of the Tulane community – student, faculty, staff or young alumni – this cash award was endowed by Timothy Sykes, Tulane College ‘03.

A candidate may self-nominate or be nominated by another member of the Tulane community by means of a statement (minimum 2 pages) that describes the individual’s talent/potential and supports that description with a listing of his/her related accomplishments or an example of the applicant’s work. Applications for the award will be reviewed by a committee appointed by President Cowen.

Completed nominations are due by April 28, 2008 and may be submitted by
e-mail
or by mailing them to the Office of Development, Suite 200, 3439 Prytania Street, New Orleans, LA 70115, Please call 504.314.7633, with any questions.

The winner of the 2007 Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award was Susan Zaluski. Susan received a master’s degree in international development from Tulane in 2006. Susan decided to turn her offbeat ideas into an unexpected career involving boat-building, and is pursuing her dream of combining maritime preservation and boat-building as a vocational training tool for youth.

The donor seeks to recognize and nurture talented individuals whose abilities and accomplishments may not be in traditional areas of endeavor. There are many ways to be “successful” in today's society and this award acknowledges young people with unique interests and passions. This does not preclude from consideration those with significant demonstrated success in the classroom or on the playing field. It simply seeks to broaden the definition of accomplishment in a university environment.

Challenge Grant Opportunities

The Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. (A&S’79) Regional Challenge Grant for Tulane Alumni Residing in the DC, Virginia, Maryland Area

Tulane alumnus Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. has announced a unique opportunity for alumni in the D.C., Virginia and Maryland area making a gift to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund. Mr. Small will match all donations, dollar for dollar*, made to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund from alumni donors in D.C., Virginia and Maryland who have not yet made a gift to the Tulane Rebuilding Fund - up to $500,000 total.
This Challenge allows these alumni to give to Tulane University knowing that the amount they give will be doubled, making the impact of their individual gifts even greater. The collective impact of new gifts from alumni and matching funds from this challenge grant will provide essential support for Tulane during its rebuilding process.
Donors from these areas need only make their gift to the Rebuilding Fund.  Qualifying gifts will automatically be applied to the Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. Challenge Grant.
