Tulane University Rebuilding Fund

The Tulane University Rebuilding Fund was established in September 2005 as a response to the outpouring of support from our alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to help the university rebound from Hurricane Katrina healthier and stronger than ever. Because of the enormous challenges we face, Tulane has set a goal to raise $100 million in rebuilding initiatives by 2007. This initiative is advancing and thanks to your generous support we have raised over $80.5 million toward our goal.

You may designate your Rebuilding gift to a particular school or department as these designations reflect the commitment and support that you have demonstrated for them over the years.

Associates recognition levels remain in place as we raise unrestricted funds earmarked for our rebuilding efforts.

• Through the fund, your gift will make possible supplemental services and educational support that is crucially needed for students, faculty and staff through the initial months of rebuilding.
• Your gift also will help offset costs of various programs and scholarship assistance vital to student retention and recruitment.
• Additionally, your gift will aid in preserving and upgrading equipment, learning resources and facilities, especially when other means are insufficient.

Ultimately, your gift will help renew Tulane University and the communities we serve. Please donate today.

TULANE REBUILDING FUND TRUST

What is it?
It is a charitable remainder trust with a term of up to five years that pays income during that term to you or others that you name.  When the trust ends, its remaining assets go to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund.

Why five years?
Although a charitable remainder trust can be established for the life of the beneficiary or a term of up to 20 years, a trust with a term of five years or less will have greater impact on our rebuilding efforts.  Katrina caused unprecedented property damage and operational losses to Tulane.  The immediate needs are great and are likely to be ongoing.  Interest-only interim financing Tulane arranged in the early days of the crisis will come due after five years.

How much income does it pay?
A Tulane Rebuilding Fund Trust will pay up to 10%.  The income can be fixed at 10% of the initial value of the trust, or it can be variable based on 10% of the value of the trust as determined each year.

Can my children or grandchildren receive the income instead of me?
Yes.  The trust can pay you or anyone that you name.  Careful planning can often eliminate or minimize gift taxes.

What are the tax benefits?
If you itemize, you are eligible for an immediate income tax deduction for the present value of the amount projected to pass to Tulane.  Also, funding the trust with appreciated property will not trigger tax on capital gain and the trust can sell the property without incurring tax on capital gain.  You may also save estate taxes.

What is the minimum amount to establish a Tulane Rebuilding Fund Trust?
Tulane will serve as trustee of charitable remainder trusts that benefit Tulane and are funded with $50,000 or more.

EXAMPLE:
Bob donates highly appreciated stock valued at $100,000 to a Tulane Rebuilding Fund Trust.

  • Annual fixed income for five years: $10,000 each year in quarterly installments of $2,500
  • Estimated income tax deduction: $56,941
