Cell padding

Distance between cell text and the cell border

Column group

More than one column in a table treated as a unit for formatting purposes.

Columnar layout

A layout wherein content is arranged into columns

Fixed-width font

A font wherein each letter takes up the same amount of space.

Fixed-width layout

A layout wherein the Web designer defines the exact size of every table element in absolute units such as pixels.

Fluid layout

A layout wherein one or more elements is sized as a percentage of the page width.

Graphical table

A table rendered with graphical elements to distinguish among the components.

Jigsaw layout

A design technique wherein the elements are broken up into units of varying size and shape and are fitted together in a table like a jigsaw puzzle.

Monospace font

See Fixed-width font.

Pre-formatted text

Text that retains the extra whitespace needed to line columns and rows up with one another.

Proportional font

A font that assigns a different amount of space for each character, depending on the width of the character.

Row group

More than one row in a table, treated as a unit for formatting purposes.

Sectional layout

A layout wherein the Web designer breaks the content into sections, placing each section in its own table cell.

Spanning cell

A cell that occupies more than one row or column in a table.

Text table

A table that contains only text and standard word processing characters for formatting.
