JEM – Jewish Enrichment Moment
Much to the chagrin of my parents, to whom I left the odious
task of mailing them, I came to college with at least thirty books.
Most of them I had already read. Like any true book junkie though, I
know a good book should be read more than once. Each time, it says something
new. Each reading provides comforting familiarity. How much more true,
then, for the Torah. On the one hand, the Torah is continuously open,
its contents offering limitless interpretations.
On the other hand, we all know the Biblical narrative, a story that
is, in the end, about us. Comfort, too, lies in its familiarity. This
week, we start the Torah again with Bereshit, repeating the narrative
that we all know so well.
May we glean new things from its story this year. May we gain comfort
in the repetition of our story.
THE SPITZER FORUM
Provides Jewish college activists with opportunities to sharpen their
social justice skills through meetings and workshops with leading experts
in politics, community service and international relations. The Spitzer
Forum is held in conjunction with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs
(JCPA) Plenum. Students may choose to take part in sessions offered
by the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life Institute and the
Jewish Council for Public Affairs Plenum
taking place concurrently with the Spitzer Forum. Students interested
in becoming involved in public policy as journalists can choose to participate
in a smaller specialized track co-sponsored by the American Jewish Press
Association. Contact Margalit Weinblatt at mweinblatt@hillel.org
for more information. Applications are available online www.hillel.org.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Bring New Republic Writers and Editors to Campus;
Subscribe to the Magazine for Free
Receive a free three-month subscription to The New Republic magazine's
online edition. This is a new opportunity for student leaders to further
their understanding of U.S. politics, foreign affairs, arts and culture.
The magazine also features incisive articles that illuminate Israel's
ongoing quest for peace and security. The New Republic is offering this
subscription to students because of Hillel International Board of Governors
co-Chair Michael Steinhardt's involvement with the magazine and with
Hillel. "It's exciting, essential reading for those with an active
interest in the world
around them and who plan to become leaders of their community,"
said Steinhardt. Take advantage of this great offer by checking out
http://www.tnr.com/user/s.mhtml?r=hillel2.
In addition, New Republic writers and editors are available for speaking
engagements on campuses. If interested, please contact Peter Glovin
at The New Republic at 212-465-8447 ext. 38.
