SUBJECT HEADINGS
This study guide is designed for the student of Spanish or Latin American literature. It is a
selected list of resource materials available in the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, and is not meant
to be inclusive. For a complete listing of the holdings of Howard-Tilton, see the TULANET terminal
under the subject heading LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE, SPANISH AMERICAN
LITERATURE, or SPANISH LITERATURE. For genres of literature such as poetry or fiction,
use the name of the genre after Latin American, Spanish American, or Spanish, such as LATIN
AMERICAN POETRY or SPANISH FICTION. For literature of specific Latin American
countries, use the nationality of the genre, such as MEXICAN LITERATURE or PERUVIAN
DRAMA. For specific authors or works, look under the author's last name or under the title of the
work. In the case of an author with paternal and maternal family names, look under the paternal
name, which is the first surname. As an example, Federico Garcia Lorca would be cataloged under
the name Garcia, since his father's family name was Garcia. If two family names are connected by "y"
or "de", use the first (paternal) surname. Maria Esquivel de Sanchez would be cataloged under the
name of Esquivel, and Jose Ortega y Gasset would be cataloged under Ortega.
To find other standard subject headings, consult Library of Congress Subject Headings, a
three volume work located near TULANET terminals. All books cataloged in Howard-Tilton use the
Library of Congress Subject Headings. To locate periodicals, check the OPAC database in
TULANET under the complete title of the periodical. Omit any beginning articles such as "the", "la",
"a" or "el" that occur in the title, and omit puncutation.
For the purposes of this guide, works relating to the literature of Spain and Latin America are
intermixed. Thus, under dictionaries and encyclopedias, there will be books that include Latin
America only, Spain only, or that include both Spain and Latin America.
Many of the cited works are in Spanish. Generally, the title and the place of publication will
indicate the language of the text. Some periodicals will have articles in both English and Spanish.
While some reference materials will be located in the Latin American Library on the 4th floor,
most literature is located on the 2nd floor even if it is Latin American in origin. LAL at the end of
a call number indicates that the particular item is located in the Latin American Library. REF
indicates that an item is located within the reference collection on the first floor. If you have
questions, please inquire at the Reference Desk on the first floor.
