17. Glossary¶

algorithm
The sequence of steps taken to perform a computation.
argument(s)
The information that a method needs to work, suffixed to it between parenthesis, as in attribute.method(argument).
attribute
The information that a method needs to work, prefixed to it with a dot, as in attribute.method(argument).
command line interface
A piece of software that allows you to type a single line of code that the software will execute. Spyder’s Console is a command line interface, as is the Macintosh Terminal or the Windows Command Prompt.
concatenation
To join two strings to produce a third one.
deductive learning
To master a concept by beginning with a general defnition or description and applying it to examples.
embedding
The location of one operation ‘inside’ another. Synonym of nesting.
escape character
A special character that tells Python to interpret the following character in a special. It is often the backslash \.
frequency
The ratio of the number of tokens of a type to the total number of tokens in a corpus.
function
A method defined by the user.
identifier
The name of a variable.
immutable
Said of a data type that cannot be changed by assignment once it is created.
index
The number associated with an element that marks its place in a sequence.
inductive learning
To master a concept by beginning with examples and drawing a general conclusion.
integrated development environment
A piece of software such as Spyder that includes everything that you need to code a project in a computer programming language.
keywords
The strings that Python reserves for its own usage which cannot be variable names, such as print. Synonym of keyword.
nesting
The location of one operation ‘inside’ another. Synonym of embedding.
ordinality
The order of elements.
points
Said of an item that refers to another item in Python’s memory.
prompt
One or more characters that indicate that a program is waiting for your input.
reserved words
The strings that Python reserves for its own usage which cannot be variable names, such as print. Synonym of keyword.
script
A program that you save as a file that Python can execute, which ends in the .py suffix.
slicing
The extraction of a substring from a string with square brackets, string[start:end:step].
string
A sequence of characters delimited between single or double quotes.
token
An instance or ejemplar of a type.
type
The cateogory of a variable in Python, such as integer, string, list, etc. A category of objects, in contrast to “token”.
