Extended Military Leave of Absence Policy

An Extended Military Leave of Absence occurs when an employee serves in the United States military for an extended period of time.Tulane University's Extended Military Leave of Absence Policy applies to all Tulane faculty and staff. Please note there are some differences between faculty policy and staff policy.

Staff

  • Under USERRA (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act) guidelines, all University employees will be reinstated upon return.
  • Staff will continue to accrue vacation, sick leave, cost-of-living increases, and seniority while on Extended Military Leave of Absence.
  • If previously eligible for retirement benefits, Tulane will make any plan contributions on behalf of the returning employee that would have been made if the person had not left for military service. The University will not make up investment earnings.
  • The University will continue to pay for life insurance for up to twelve months.
  • Employee can pay for voluntary life insurance for up to twelve months.
  • If employee elects and continues to make required contributions, then the University will continue health and/or dental insurance.
  • Extended Military Leave of Absence is an unpaid leave of absence. Follow existing policies in Staff Handbook.

Faculty
