Guidelines for a National Programme for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: (This is a WHO EMRO Technical Publication, No. 12):

There are a number of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in which iodine deficiency disorders pose a major public health problem in certain localized areas. The problem of endemic goitre at least has been known for decades in these countries but, unfortunately, not one has a functioning national programme for the control of goitre or of iodine deficiency disorders in general. This publication is the outcome of the collective thinking that resulted from the Intercountry Consultation on Control of IDD, held in December 1987 at the Regional Office of Alexandria. Wherever necessary, background information, required for decision-making and for technical management, has been included. In general, the booklet provides information which will acquaint governments with the precise nature of the problem, its causes and the steps that can be undertaken to tackle it, including possible sources of external support.

Guia Para La Produccion De Sal Yodada De Alta Calidad (Guide to the Production of High Quality Iodized Salt) Produced through the OMNI Project, with the assistance of OSMOSIS and PATH. 1997.

This guide contains illustrations and simple messages on the key aspects of salt production for improving the quality of the salt and ensuring its effective iodization. The guide, written in Spanish and intended for use by salt producers, includes all of the stages of production, from the pre-production preparation and care of the salt, to its storage and iodization. The guide was developed in Guatemala, where a system of solar evaporation of sea water with black polyethylene is used to produce salt. However, many of the technical principles and procedures that are included in the guide can be applied or adapted to other systems of salt production used in other countries.

Improving Child Health Through Nutrition: The Nutrition Minimum Package

The interventions that target the six most important nutrition behaviors have been called the Minimum Package of nutrition interventions, and these should be implemented by all primary health care programs. The Minimum Package interventions aim to achieve the following health and nutrition behaviors: exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months; appropriate complementary feeding starting at about 6 months in addition to breastfeeding until 24 months; adequate vitamin A intake for women, infants, and young children; appropriate nutritional management during and after illness; iron/folate tablets taken by all pregnant women; and regular use of iodized salt by all families. There is widespread agreement regarding the urgency of moving ahead with the Minimum Package. Programs need to adapt nutritional interventions to local circumstances and incorporate them into primary health care activities at the household, community, and health facility levels.
