New Animated Public Service Announcements for the Elimination of IDD

Three 30-second public service information clips on the subject of iodine deficiency disorders were created and produced by Brazilian animator Darlan Rosa, winner of the ICCIDD/UNICEF storyboard competition. The clips are entitled: "The Importance of Iodine in the Fetus Formation"; "The Importance of Iodine for Intelligence Development"; and "The Importance of Iodine for Nation Building".

The clips are available for use by private and public organizations who wish to promote awareness of iodine deficiency disorders. Those interested may contact William Hetzer, Chief of Broadcasting Electronic Communication Section, UNICEF, #3 UN Plaza, New York, NY 10017, Tel:. (212) 326-7290, Fax: (212) 326-7731.

Darlan Rosa Wins Animation Competition

Each of the three clips addresses the consequences of iodine deficiency from the perspective of fetal development, intellectual development and socio-economic development, identifies iodine deficiency as the cause in each situation, and proposes the use of iodized salt as the common solution. Because the clips are animated and use voice-overs, they transcend national and language barriers and are well suited for use internationally.

The animator has made use of the same set of characters in each of the three clips. The main characters consist of a happy, healthy, iodized-salt-using family, and include a character who represents iodine. The use of the iodine character successfully clarifies the link between the use of iodized salt and the portrayal of certain more abstract concepts such as fetal brain development, reduced intellectual capacity and the presence of absence of iodine in food.
