POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDD

There is IDD legislation in Argentina.  No other legislation is being developed or is about to be enacted into law.  Iodization of salt is mandatory at the level of 30 ppm.

Government Agency to Address IDD

The government agency that deals with IDD is the Ministry of Health/Instituto Nacional de Alimentos/Food Surveillance Department.  The only function of the agency is to monitor salt iodization.

Oral supplementation with iodized oil capsules is not currently used.
Fortification
Production and Importation of Salt

There is iodized salt production in Argentina.

More than 90% of salt produced is iodized.

The intended level of salt iodization at the point of production is 30 PPM.

Large-scale salt iodization started in 1968.

There are currently twenty salt producers and all iodize salt.  Two of the salt producers produce 90% of the salt market.

Potassium iodate and iodide are used to iodize salt.  They are both allowed according to the National Food Codex.

There is no importation of iodized salt into the country.

Salt iodine content at production level is assessed by 1) Manufacturers quality control check and 2) federal surveillance by the Instituto Nacional de Alimentos (INAL).

*  Ninety-four percent of salt production achieves the target iodine level and is assessed by INAL.

*  There are no other measures of fortification with iodine in widespread use.

Iodized Salt Survey

The INAL and the Minister of Health coordinates a permanent national surveillance system at the consumer level.  In the year 2001, 94% of the salt produced achieved the iodine levels of 30ppm, 3% were without iodine and 3% more or less than expected
