Most Recent Anemia Survey:    National Survey- Nutritional Surveillance Project
Date: 2001
Groups Surveyed: School-age children, adolescents, and non-pregnant mothers.
Sample Size: 4,753
Sampling Method: Randomly selected households in 24 fixed rural sub-districts with mothers and children who were less than 5 years of age.  Blood samples were taken from all mothers and from children who were 19 years and younger.

Legislation on IDA
     There is no legislation to address iron deficiency in Belize.
    

There has been documents published stating the national policy.

     There is national policy on iron supplementation for women, but not for children.  It is being considered.

Non-Pregnant Mothers

    

Those mothers who were not presently pregnant but had been pregnant in the past.  

    

Continued supplementation for lactating mothers 0-3 months post-partum.

Those mothers who were detected as being pregnant or as soon as the pregnancy began.  Continued throughout the pregnancy.

Programs such as school discussion and classes as well as other programs to alert the general public of the problem.

Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
    

A national study on iron deficiency anemia was conducted in 2001 and results from this study are currently being discussed for future program implementation.
