POLICY & LEGISLATION

 

Legislation on IDD

    

IDD legislation in Burundi was passed in April, 1992.  Iodization of salt is mandatory at the level of 50 ppm at customs.

 
Government Agency to Address IDD
    

The government agency that deals with IDD is the MoH/Lutte contre les maladis transmissibles et Carentielles (LMTC).  It functions as both a coordination agency and a monitoring agency.

PROGRAM DATA

Supplementation
     Oral supplementation with iodized oil capsules is not currently used, but was used from 1991 to 2001.  It targeted primary school children and pregnant women in health centers.
Fortification
Production and Importation of Salt
    

There is no iodized salt production.

    

The total annual national production of iodized salt was not reported.

     Iodized salt is imported from Tanzania (85%) and the rest comes from Kenya and Eritrea.
    

The intended level of iodization of imported salt is 50 ppm.

    

Salt iodine content is checked at customs.

    

*   In 2001, 95.9% of the salt checked had 15 ppm or more, done via rapid test kits.

Retail
   

*  The average retail cost of iodized salt is 300 Fbu or US$0.30.

 
Household Consumption
     The estimated daily per capita consumption of salt is 7g/day.
     The estimated percent of adequately iodized salt consumed as a national avgerage is not known.
