POLICY & LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
   
     Burundi does not have a policy on IDA, however, it is being developed. 
     There is legislation covering iron supplementation for pregnant women, but not for children. 
     There is no national policy or legislation for iron fortification.
 
Government Agency to Address IDD
     The government agency that deals with IDA is the MOH/Programme National de la Santé de la Reproduction (PNSR).  They are responsible for coordination and monitoring.

 Supplementation
Program Description - Pregnant Women

    

The program started in 2000.
 
Targeting

    

All pregnant women.

    

The number of women targeted is 280,000.
   
Capsule Information

    

Type of supplement provided is iron folate 60 mg.

    

Iron folate capsules are taken daily during the third trimester.
   
Implementation

    

Supplements are distributed in antenatal clinics.

    

A total of 7,700,000 tablets were distributed in the year 2001.
   
Program Description - Children

   

There is no program for children.
 
Fortification
No current fortification programs.
 
Other Programs
Education Campaigns
     There are no national programs to promote improved iron status through dietary change.
     There are community-based programs to promote iron status via dietary change.  The target groups are women and children.  The programs are run by the staff of health centers and community health workers. 
   
Malarial Programs
     Malaria control and nutrition are a part of the same program, “ Lutte contre les maladies Transmissibles et Carentielles

Anemia
Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
     Not yet available.
     There are lab facilities for Hb estimates in some health centers and hospitals.
