    There is no VAD legislation in Burundi, however, there is legislation being developed.
 

Government Agency to Address VAD

     The Ministry of Health/Lutte contre les Maladies Transmissibles et Carentielles (LMTC) is responsible for both coordination and monitoring of VAD.

     Supplementation occurs in selective feeding programs, National Immunization Days, and is being integrated in routine EPI activities and IMCI.

Fortification
    

There are no VitA fortification programs in Burundi.
Other Programs
Dietary Change
     There is a nationwide program for improved vitamin A status via dietary change.  The program emphasizes locally available vitamin A rich foods.

Community-based Programs
     There are activities to promote improved vitamin A status through selective feeding programs and community nutrition activities.  Target groups are children under five and women.  This is run by the staff of nutrition centers, health centers, and community workers.
     
     
 
MONITORING
 

Clinical and Sub-clinical VAD
     Monitoring activities are not yet in place.
 
Supplementation
     Vitamin A capsules that are imported are monitored by the supply section.  UNICEF is importing and distributing all the vitamin A within the country.
     Coverage of supplementation programs are monitored through monthly reports and field visits.
Fortification
     There are no fortification programs to monitor.

     External Donor Agencies include MI in Canada, and UNICEF.  UNICEF provides technical assistance and the supply of vitamin A capsules.  MI's function was not reported.
