POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
     There is currently no national policy to address iron deficiency, however it is being developed.
     The government has not published any documents stating national policy on iron deficiency.
     There is a national policy on iron supplementation for pregnant women, but not for children.

 Supplementation
Program Description - Pregnant Women

    

The program began in the 1980's.

    

The target group is pregnant women

    

The type of supplement used is iron folate tablets.

    

The supplement is distributed through antenatal services.

    

The supplement is provided during the 16th week of pregnancy and post-partum.

    

The overall number of capsules distributed is unknown.
Program Description - Children

    

There is no consistent national iron supplementation program for children.

    

Iron folate supplements are provided for ill and at risk children at health clinics.
Fortification

   

There is no fortification of iron.
Other Programs
Dietary Change
     There are large-scale / national programs for improved status though dietary change.  These programs are run by clinics, health centers, and health professionals.

Anemia
Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
     There are no monitoring activities
     The surveys described in the EPIDEMIOLOGY section are being repeated.  The Food and Nutrition Research Institute undertakes National Nutrition Surveys every 5 years and includes blood sample collection for hemoglobin measurement.
     There are lab facilities for Hb in the antenatal care facilities.
