Most Recent Anemia Survey:   
Date: 1992
Groups Surveyed: Non-pregnant women>15 years of age; Pregnant women of any age; Men>15 years of age; Children 6-60 months; Children 5-11 years; and Children 12-14 years of age.
Sample Size: 465 households.
Sampling Method: Household survey given to 465 households in 10 population districts.  Blood samples for hemoglobin analysis were also collected from 1518 individuals.
Estimated Anemia Prevalence:  Hb<110 g/L, Hb<115 g/L, Hb<120 g/L, Hb<130 g/L.

National Campaigns

    

The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) is the large-scale/national programs implemented to improve dietary change.   

    

This council produced a video and accompanying pamphlet titled "Anemia-Let's get the facts" which was distributed through the Ministry of Health to communities, clinics, and schools.  
Community-based Programs

    

The Agency for Rural Transformation is the community-based program in Grenada.

    

This agency conducts an anemia control program in various communities.
   
 
Other Programs

    

No other programs reported aimed at improving iron status.

    

Malaria or worm infestation are not a national problem, but may be found in small communities. 
     
     
 

MONITORING

 
Anemia
Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
    

Three target groups are monitored, and from each blood samples are taken and analyzed at the central office.

    

Target groups include pregnant women, post-natal women, and children one years old.

    

Indicators for each target group are 11gm, 10gm, and 11gm respectively.

Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
Lab facilities available for Hb estimates
    

Laboratory facilities at the general hospital are used to determine Hb estimates.

    

HemoCue field tests are used at medical stations and health centers.

Programs
    

Monitoring of iron content was conducted once flour fortification had begun.  This process of monitoring had discontinued due to lack of funds.

    

Distribution of product in Grenada is not observed, but products are monitored in shops and supermarkets nationwide.
