POLICY AND LEGISLATION |
Legislation on IDD |
There is IDD legislation in Honduras. It was passed in 1960 and has been significantly revised. |
Iodization of salt mandatory with a mandated level of salt iodization at 67-100 ppm. |
The government does not publish documents regarding IDD. |
| Government Agency to Address IDD | |
The government agency that deals with IDD is the Ministry of Health. The MoH functions as both a coordination agency and a monitoring agency, but it does not provide funding. UNICEF supports technical and financial monitoring activities. |

| Supplementation | |
Oral supplementation with iodized oil capsules is not currently used and has not been used in the past. There are no supplementation activities currently in place. |

| Production and Importation of Salt | |
There is salt production, but un-iodized sea salt is imported and iodized. |
The total annual national production of iodized salt was 843,344.5 qq in 2001. |
The intended level of salt iodization at the point of production is 50-100 PPM. |
Large-scale salt iodization started in 1971. |
There are currently 150 salt producers and among those, 25 plants iodize salt. |
Potassium iodate is used to iodize salt. |
High density, polyethylene bags of 0.5 and 1 pound are used for packaging. |
Salt is imported from Costa Rica, Mexico and USA. These salts are iodized. |
Salt iodine content at production level is assessed by 1) Manufacturers quality control check and 2) Monitoring of samples of each batch of salt iodized in the plant by the local Government. In 2000, an inspection by the government showed that 88% of salt production achieved the targeted iodine level. |

MONITORING |
| Salt Iodine | |
| Current monitoring activities for iodine levels in salt | |
The most recent salt iodization survey results, based on government monitoring activities, was conducted in 2000. Survey 2001 was conducted, however, results are being compiled. |
Honduras has three levels of monitoring activities. In the first level, quality control of salt iodized production is assessed in salt factories by the producers. The second level is inspected by the government, Dept. of Food Control (MoH), in the salt factories and monitors retail's survey of salt iodization. Lastly, the Dept. of Food Control also conducts surveillance in households. |
The surveys above have been repeated since 1993. |
UNICEF provides salt testing kits in schools to be used in households surveillance of quality of iodized salt. |
IDD Indicators |
There is no ongoing monitoring of goiter rate. |
