POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
IDA policy exists covering universal iron supplementation and fortification.
Government publishes documents that state national policy regarding iron deficiency for pregnant women and children.  Legislation also exists for iron fortification programs of wheat flour with iron, niacin, vitamin B12, thiamine and calcium.
Fortiftication program that is currently implemented are wheat/maize flour with iron, niacin, vitamin B12, thiamine and folic acid.

Government Agency to Address IDD
Ministry of Health is the government agency that deals with iron deficiency.  The agency functions as a coordinating and monitoring body.
Agency contact information: Fortification - Department of Food Control, Supplementation - Department of Mother-Child

PROGRAM DATA

 Supplementation
Program Description - Pregnant women

To provide iron supplements to pregnant women.

Targeting

All pregnant women in ante-natal control..

Total covered approximately 204,000 women (2001).

Capsule Information

Type of iron supplement provided is iron 60 mg/day and folic acid.

Implementation

Supplements are distributed in antenatal clinics.

The intended frequency of supplementation doses is daily at the first control of pregnancy during six months.

Program Description - Children

To provide iron drops to children 4-59 months in age.

Targeting

Total covered approximately 895,000 children (2000).

Implementation

Children are given iron drops daily in clinics.

Fortification

Currently, there are two food fortification programs: wheat flour and maize.

The wheat flour program is legislated and currently implemented.  Approximately 100% of the commodity in the market is fortified and 45 ppm is the level of food fortification with iron.

The maize program is implemented with 56% of the commodity in the market is fortified.  The level of iron fortification is 25 ppm.

Other Programs
Education Campaigns
There are no large-scale or national programs, including mass media campaigns, to promote improved iron status through dietary change.

De-worming Programs

De-worming campaigns are conducted in schools and clinics before iron is given.

MONITORING

Anemia
Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
Health workers applying the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) observe the eyes and hands for anemia.
Surveys described in the epidemiology section are not being repeated.
There are facilities and community-based monitoring of anemia.  It is in conjunction with IMCI.  Laboratory facilities in Honduras have the capacity to estimate hemoglobin status.  Field tests to assess iron status are used (recently used in the National Micronutrient Survey-1996).

Programs
Coverage of supplementation programs is not monitored.
The content and distribution of iron fortified commodities are monitored.  The function is conducted by the Food Control Department.
