Most Recent Anemia Survey:    National - Conducted by MOH, UNICEF and WHO

Groups Surveyed: Women 15 - 49 yrs. of age
Sample Size: 1801
Sampling Method: Proportional to size, self weighted multistage cluster sampling design was used. There were 43 urban clusters and 41 rural clusters. The final sampling stage was a systematic random sample of houses.  Women were interviewed in their homes blood samples were also drawn for Hb and ferritin

POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
     There is no legislation to address iron deficiency in Jordan.
    

There has been documents published stating the national policy.

     There is national policy on iron supplementation for women, but not for children.  It is being considered.

30% of women in Jordan visit the Maternal and Child Health Centers.
   
Capsule Information

    

Iron folate tablets.
Implementation

    

Supplements are distributed in the Maternal and Child Health Centers.

    

The intended frequency of supplementation is monthly doses to all pregnant women in the 2nd trimester.

    

The national program started in 1980.

Fortification

    

Wheat flour is fortified at 30 ppm and is monitored by using semi-quantitative methods.

    

The amount of iron fortificant that is being produced is 80 ton/year.
Dietary Change

    

There is a national campaign to raise the level of awareness about first, the existence for bread fortified with iron, and second, the positive health implications of eating this bread. The first phase of the communication campaign is supported by posters and leaflets which have been especially produced. They provide women and children with information on natural sources of iron and best practices. The next stage of the campaign will involve the development and production of more information material to educate the public on ways to increase their intake of iron.
