Most Recent Sub-Clinical VAD Survey:  The survey was conducted by the Social Productivity Programme (SPP) at the Jordanian Ministry of Planning in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the University of Jordan.

Sample Size: 1027
Sampling Method: Children were sampled in less privileged areas of Jordan (Mafrak, Deir Alla, Shouneh, Karak, Tafileh, Maan, & Aqaba). Schools representing the seven study areas were selected randomly

Other Sub-Clinical VAD Survey:  A study was conducted by MOH, UNICEF and WHO.
Date: June / July 1997
Groups Surveyed: Children 6-71 months.  The study areas selected were described as under privileged rural areas “Mafraq, Madaba , and the control area was Jerash city”.
Sample Size: 400 children (213m/183f) were selected from three areas, 300 from the two study areas and 100 from the control area.
Sampling Method: A convenient sample was collected from the households of both the study and the control areas (400 household), taking into consideration the average family size in Jordan (6.2 members) and the percentage of children under 5 years of age (15% of the population).

POLICY AND LEGISLATION

 

Legislation on VAD

     There is no VAD legislation in Jordan, nor is it being developed or about to be enacted into law.
     There have been no documents published stating the national policy regarding VAD.

Government Agency to Address VAD

      The Ministry of Health.  Their function is both coordination and monitoring.

Program Description
     Vitamin A supplementation was conducted in eight high risk areas, to school children aged 6-11 years through their schools. The programme started in year 2000.
     There is no policy to address vitamin A supplementation for mothers within 8 weeks of delivery.

MONITORING
 

Clinical and Sub-clinical VAD

     There is a survey being conducted in 2002, if it is found there is a need for monitoring activities, it will then be considered.
     Serum Retinol is used as the indicator for monitoring sub-clinical VAD in children.
 
Supplementation
     Imported capsules are tested by the Drug Administration Department in the Ministry of Health.

    

Coverage of the supplementation program is accomplished via field visits by supervisors to schools to make sure that vitamin A capsules are given to targeted children.
Fortification
     There is no fortification to monitor.
