POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDD

There is IDD legislation in Liberia, of importation of iodized salt and regulation of food fortification with iodine.

Iodization of salt is mandatory.  The mandated level of iodization is 100ppm.

The government has published documents regarding IDD.  (Application decrees in 2000)

Production and Importation of Salt

Iodized salt is not produced.

The intended level of salt iodization at the point of production:

Large scale iodization started in

Approximate number of salt producers:

The compound used to iodize salt:
     The packaging method used is:

About 90% of imported salt is iodized.  It is imported from Europe, Asia, China, and West Africa.

The intended level of iodization for imported salt is 50 to 80ppm of iodization at production and 30 to 50 ppm at retail.

Salt iodine content at production level is assessed by:  No information available on such assessment

Retail

*  The average retail cost of iodized salt is Iodized =$0.25     Un-iodized = $0.25  in urban areas.  Cost per kilo of iodized salt in the rural areas varies from $0.30 to $0.50 in remote areas.

Household Consumption
The estimated daily per capita consumption of salt is unknown.
The estimated percent of adequately iodized salt consumed, as a national average is 83%.  (Source: not reported)

Surveys of Iodized Salt

     No survey has been done.
Other Programs Related to Control of IDD
Mass Media Campaigns
Promotion of consumption of iodized salt through  radio soap and messages.

Community-Based Dietary Promotion

Community-based promotion began in five selected communities in one of the 15 counties only in 2001.
