Sampling Method: Using the General Census of the Population habitat, determined two stratified clusters.  30 survey clusters were selected from each stratified cluster for the survey.

POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
     There is legislation to address iron deficiency in Madagascar covering supplementation.  Legislation was adopted in 1998 and has not been significantly revised.
     There is national policy on iron supplementation for children and pregnant women.  The policy for children primarily regards school children.
     There is no national policy regarding iron fortification programs and it is not under consideration.
 
Government Agency to Address IDD
     Department of Nutrition- Ministry of Health.  The function of this agency is both coordination and monitoring.

Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
    

Surveys in 10 Iron/vitamin A sentinel sites are conducted every 2 years.

    

There are laboratory facilities at the Nutrition Lab-Ministry of Health using Hb blood spot assays for Hb estimates.

    

Field tests are also used in Hb estimates.
