POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
There are strategies to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency by 30% in pregnant women, to achieve 100% supplementation coverage of pregnant women, to test community action strategies against anemia, to make the IEC for the consumption of foods rich in iron, and to promote the fortification of foods with iron.
The policy to address iron deficiency was announced in 1998, and covers systematic supplementation.
There is no policy for children.
There is no policy for fortification, but it is under consideration as part of existing programs.  There is a national committee considering this question.

Government Agency to Address IDD
The National Department of Health is the government agency that deals with iron deficiency.
They are responsible for coordination and monitoring.

PROGRAM DATA

 Supplementation
Pregnant and Post-partum Women.

The target group is 490, 545 pregnant women
They are given 1 tablet (60mg iron and 400ug folate) per day from first contact until 2 months after delivery.
Tablets are distributed during prenatal care visits.
It is estimated that the number of capsules available in the country would cover only the needs of 30% of the women attending prenatal care.
Children

There is no program for the supplementation of children.

Fortification
No current fortification programs.

Other Programs
This project promotes the consumption of local foods rich in iron.  All women in the area of HKI's child survival project are included.  this program includes health centers, Health professionals, and Community Centers.
The National Program for the Fight against Malaria (PNLP) is also directly aimed at improving anemia in the population through the organization of groups to promote the use of impregnated mosquito nets.

MONITORING

Anemia
Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
There is currently no national monitoring activity for iron deficiency.
There are laboratory facilities available for Hb estimates (La Numeration Formule Sanguine).
The HemoCue is used in large scale surveys: EDS III (for which the results are not yet available), and for certain well targeted surveys.  It involves gathering a drop of blood with a microcuvette, and the reading is taken right away.

Programs
Coverage in supplementation and fortification programs is not monitored.

PROGRAM RESOURCES

The iron supplementation program of women is a national activity that is covered by by the Pharmacy of Mali and cost recovery where pregnant women buy the iron tablets.
