Groups Surveyed: In the Segou Region, school children from 21 out of 50 schools
Sample Size: 740 boys, 680 girls.
Sampling Method: simple random sample. 
Estimated Prevalence of VAD: Bitot Spots- 16.7%

Corneal lesions- 0.1%

Xerophthalmia- 0%

Government Agency to Address VAD

     The Department of Nutrition and the National Department of Health deal with VAD, and provide coordination and monitoring.

Supplementation
Program Description
     Campaign JNV 2001:  National campaign with a 98% coverage of the target group of 2,258,647 children between 6 and 59 months.  The program was launched in 1998.
     Campaign JRMI 2000: In the Koulikoro region.  109% coverage for the targeted 148,308 children between 6 and 59 months, and 139% coverage for the targeted 23,295 post partum women. 
     Vitamin A is given through National Immunization Days, Schools, Clinics, and other mass campaigns.

Fortification

    

Currently, there is no food fortification with Vitamin A.  The FRAT study has been done to identify which foods are the best vehicles to function as targets for deficiency with fortification.  Three international consultations have been done for sugar, flour and oil.

Clinical and Sub-clinical VAD

     There is no monitoring activities for clinical or sub-clinical vitamin A deficiencies. 
 
Supplementation
    The stock management  is monitored.
    The coverage of supplementation programs is monitored with activity reports.

Donor Agencies
     The national and state governments are involved in Promotion, distribution, follow-up, and education.
    UNICEF, HKI, OMS, Plan International, SNV, USAID, Rotary International are involved in supplying, and support of national activities.
