POLICY AND LEGISLATION

Legislation on IDA
     There is no legislation regarding IDA currently in place, but it is being developed.
     The legislation will focus on supplementation, and the government has published documents stating the national policy on iron deficiency
     There is a national policy on iron supplementation for pregnant women but not for children.  The program for children supplementation is being developed.
     There is no national policy regarding iron fortification programs but it is being developed.

     Government Agency: National and State Nutrition and MCH departments.  The function of this agency is coordination and monitoring.

Current monitoring activities for iron deficiency anemia:
    

Evaluation checklists along with previous surveys being repeated are used in monitoring for iron deficiency anemia 

    

There is no facility or community-based monitoring of anemia.

    

There are lab facilities in collaboration with lab techniques in health centers and hospitals in various states available for Hb estimates. 

    

Field tests (HemoCue) are not currently used, but have been used in previous surveys.
