Philippines: Vitamin A Project Entitled 'Turning the Corner in Prevention of Vitamin A Deficiency,' this project is carried out in collaboration with the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the Philippines. The Project design is based on earlier findings that vitamin A deficiency (low serum retinol) was persisting at high levels (more than one third of children are affected) in the country, plus research carried out by Tulane and FNRI that demonstrated that the effect of a dose of vitamin A supplement - normally given every 6 months - lasted for only about 3 months. This two-year study, funded by CDC through ASPH, is testing the effects of more frequent administration of vitamin A supplements, every three months, plus a pilot scheme for fortified vegetable oil. A project description can be found here.
