DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY

Ghana
The Anatomy Departments of the University of Ghana Medical School and the Tulane University Medical School have enjoyed a mutually productive informal link for the past six and one half years. It is proposed to expand the link to include all the basic medical science departments.

Since 1988, through the use of medical school and departmental funds, the anatomy departments have exchanged eight faculty members and four students.

The programs provide an ambulatory, community oriented, curative and preventive health care experience (except South Africa which is in-hospital) for fourth year medical students of Tulane University and the LCME accredited medical schools in the U.S.A. and Canada. About 70 students are enrolled yearly; 60% being Tulane students. Administrative costs are met through the Program in Community Medicine budget.

Standing student exchange programs have allowed medical students (37 over the past two years) to participate in in-hospital services.


DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE - INFECTIOUS DISEASE SECTION

Brazil, India, New Zealand

This is a clinical rotation site for a training program which has been funded by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) to provide AIDS clinical experiences to foreign physicians. During the academic year 1991-1992, it hosted 3 physicians from India for a 5-week clinical rotation through this program. During the 1992-1993 academic year, it hosted one physician from Brazil for a 3-week clinical experience, and one physician from New Zealand for a 2-week clinical experience, also through this lDSA-sponsored program. It is anticipated that it will be invited to host WHO fellowship recipients who have requested clinical AIDS training, and expect that this will become an ongoing international training activity.

Two members of the department are involved in collaborative research. The programs with the Karolinska involves a four year granted project ($857,000) and a second project with $63,000 of funding from the Astra Arcus pharmaceutical firm of Sweden.


DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY

The Department of Radiology has had initial contact and discussions with the Fundacion Valle del Lili in Cali, Colombia in order to develop an interdepartmental advisory and educational program. This would be underway for academic year (1994-95).

To establish Tulane as a premier medical education institution as well as a major resource for physicians and socially elite citizens, and position the Medical Center as the referral institution of choice among physicians and patients seeking healthcare in the U.S., the program, using Tulane clinical faculty, provides continuing education for leading physicians and medical groups in Latin America while also instructing about Tulane's overall resources and capabilities.


OFFICE OF STUDENT SERVICES AND MEdREP

Saudi Arabia - Aramco, Saudi Arabia Ministry

The Office of Student Services and MEdREP developed over the last seventeen years and implemented and implemented a Comprehensive Medical Review Program(CMRP), a certification/licensure examination preparation program for Saudia Armaco Physicians to address their test preparation needs.

The ongoing intervention program began in 1986 and has been offered semiannually to fourteen groups of five (5) or six (6) physician (Armaco) now totaling sixty-five (#65) and is to continue through 1994 in accordance with our current contract which has been renewed annually.

In 1994, we have been contacted by the Department of the Treasury of the U.S. to offer the same CMRP Program as described above to Saudi Arab physicians (10 per group) who are to be sponsored by the Saudi Arab Ministry, thus, assisting two groups per year.


THE F. EDWARD HEBERT CENTER, BELLE CHASE, LA

Japan

This is a joint venture between Tulane and Japan for biomedical research. The Center is staffed by both American and Japanese personnel. There is also some participation by graduate students from Tulane University, and the Center has one graduate stipend to offer. Funding for the Center comes from grants and contributions from both Tulane and Japan.

SECTION OF NEPHROLOGY

The section has four Chinese scholars in either post-doctoral or technician positions.


DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

GERMANY AND HONDURAS

Dr. James Muchmore has been working with physicians in Germany on a prospective trial designed to determine the efficacy of chemofiltration for locally advanced malignancies.

Approximately every six months, Dr. Ferrara brings a volunteer medical team into west central Honduras in order to provide surgical services to surrounding villages. There is no governmental affiliation, nor source of funding.


DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS/EPIDEMIOLOGY

There are a number of foreign students in the various masters and doctoral programs the department offers.


DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY

Dermatology has had international scholars from Greece and Jordan studying dermatologic surgery for a period of two to six weeks.
