Why Antigua?
This program focuses on the study of communication and society. Antigua provides a perfect context for examining how communication occurs in a different culture, and for understanding the development of social issues and concerns that shape the culture as a whole. Because Antigua is essentially a developing country, it offers a unique opportunity to experience and study inter-cultural communication and social development. Antigua's history as a former British colony and current status as an independent member of the British Commonwealth provides a rich and diverse cultural heritage. This heritage is combined with the deep ethnic traditions of Africa. The stable parliamentary system of government, the social organizations of villages, the emergence of a major tourism industry, the elaborate systems of education and religion, and the changes being brought about by the influence of mass media and advertising all comprise important and accessible areas of study.Logistically, the island is ideally suited for field-projects since it covers a manageable land area of 108 square miles and has a total population of about 65,000. It will provide many opportunities for understanding and describing how Antiguans communicate about themselves, about visitors from the outside world, about the issues that they confront, and about their ongoing social identity. In short, if one were to design a small, beautiful context which includes all the major variables in the study of communication and the development of social systems, that place would be Antigua.
Who May Attend
The Field Studies in Communication Program is open to all presently enrolled college students in good academic standing, recent high school graduates, and other adults who wish to earn college credits in a stimulating and unforgettable setting.Where Will I Live
Housing will be in a single multiple unit dwelling located at Halcyon Heights over looking the west coast of the island. This locale is ideally suited for a close walk to the beach, which provide excellent opportunities for swimming, sailing, and snorkeling among the many coral reefs, and for access to the nearby city of St. John's. Each student will share a double occupancy apartment and will have access to a common kitchen with full cooking facilities. Food and supplies can be obtained within a short distance at local grocery stores, restaurants and shops. Dickinson Bay, one of Antigua's most scenic beaches, is a short walk away and many of the island's natural beaches will be fully available for leisure time.
