Textbooks
It is the student's responsibility to purchase all required textbooks and reading materials prior to departure. A list of texts and related material will be sent to students well in advance. Books will be available at Tulane University bookstore, or may be ordered through any university bookstore. Students outside the New Orleans area may choose to purchase their textbooks from the Tulane bookstore by mail. John H. Patton, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and former Chair of the Department of Communication at Tulane. His teaching and publications focus on studies of communication and culture, political communication, theories of rhetoric and communication, persuasion, and the rhetoric of the civil rights movement. Professor Patton helped originate the Antigua Program and has regularly taught courses there. He received a J. William Fulbright American Republics Grant for study in the Caribbean and served as Visiting Senior Fellow at the Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of the West Indies-Cave Hill, Barbados. His recent publications include articles on calypso and the performance of Caribbean cultural identity in the Latin American Music Review and The Bulletin of Eastern Caribbean Affairs.Orientation
The program begins on Thursday, July 2, with an orientation to the island. This will include a tour of nearby facilities, description of travel procedures on the island, use of currency, and an introduction to shopping for food and related items. Classes will begin on Friday, July 3.Registration
Students must register for courses prior to departure. Students may choose the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option during the first week of class. Students who elect to take courses for S/U credit must check with their Deans or academic advisors to determine if credits will be accepted on that basis. In order to receive a grade of S a student must earn a C- or better in the course.
Note: All students are required to register for six credits (two courses).Cost
The full cost of this four-week program is $2,425. This includes:
- six Tulane University undergraduates/graduate credits.
- apartment housing at Halcyon Heights (double-occupancy)
- orientation sessions
- medical insurance
- arrival and departure airport transfer
- on-island transportation to St. John's and other areas for field work projects.
Airfare
The $2,425 cost of the program does NOT include airfare to and from Antigua. Students are responsible for making their own airfare arrangements and should estimate approximately $600 for the cost of round-trip airfare. The island is serviced by American, Continental, and BWIA airlines on a regular basis. Travel arrangements may be made through Tulane Travel Connection in the University Center. Students will be responsible for purchasing their own food items and supplies. The apartment housing contains a common kitchen facility for individual and group use, and meals can be economically prepared. Part of the orientation to the program will include a guide to shopping for and the availability of different types of food items at various places on the island.Passports
Any college student or adult, regardless of major area of study, is eligible to apply. Students must be in good academic standing and must submit a letter from the student's present college Dean verifying good academic standing.To apply, complete the application form and send your letter of academic standing to Professor John Patton, Director, Summer School Abroad in Antigua Program, at the Department of Communication. In addition, a $400 non-refundable deposit must be submitted no later than Friday, April 3, 1998. The balance of the program cost ($2025) is due by Friday, April 17,1998.
To complete your application process, you should also arrange for an interview with Professor Patton in the Communication Department. Non-Tulane students may interview by telephone.
Refunds
Students will receive a refund (less the non-refundable deposit) if they cancel prior to Friday, April 17, 1998. Students will receive a refund of one-half the program balance ($1,012.50) if they withdraw by Friday, May 8, 1998. Students who cancel after this date are not eligible to receive a refund.For more information
