It is the student's responsibility to purchase all required textbooks in Mexico. Books are available for purchase at the Universidad Iberoamericana bookstore or at the Department of International Students.
Students should make their travel arrangements directly with Jim Stelly at Parish Travel, (504) 525-9005/524-7666. When calling, identify yourself as a participant in the Tulane Mexico Program.
Student medical insurance works on a reimbursement basis. Students must pay Mexican doctors and hospitals directly, file an insurance claim and wait for reimbursement. Note that Mexican hospitals will not release patients until they have paid in full. We recumbent that each student maintain a credit card balance of at least $2500 to cover such a contingency.
There will be a mandatory orientation (to be scheduled) at Tulane in April. A second on-site orientation will be conducted in Mexico. It will include a Spanish placement test and specific information on classes, housing and safety in Mexico City. It is also mandatory.
Students must tentatively register in the courses of their choice prior to departure. Final registration will take place during the orientation sessions in Mexico City. NOTE: All students are required to register for six credits.
The cost of the six-week program, in addition to the $50 application fee, is $2835, which includes:
- six Tulane University undergraduate credits (tuition $1655)
- housing accommodations with a Mexican family (price $1180)
- three meals daily, except Sunday lunch
- medical insurance
- Tulane parties in typical restaurants
College students interested in applying must be in good academic standing and have at least a current cumulative grade point average of 2.5. Two letters of recommendation are required. These forms may be obtained from the Center or Latin American Studies. Students are also required to submit a current transcript with their application.To apply, complete application form , along with your transcript and a $50 non-refundable deposit, no later than Friday, March 14, 1998, to the Center for Latin American studies at the designated address. The balance of the program cost is due by April 25, 1998. Checks should be made payable to Tulane University.
Airfare, an additional $400 or so, is not included in the program cost stated above. Textbooks are also not covered in the program cost.
Students who do not wish to participate in the housing program are responsible for their own arrangements.
Students seeking loans to cover costs of this program should make early, specific arrangements with the Financial Aid Office, being sure to indicate that you are seeking a loan for a SUMMER PROGRAM. We will debit your account directly. It is your responsibility to get the loan.
All United States citizens must show proof of that citizenship in order to enter Mexico. A valid passport is strongly recommended. However, students may also present a valid voter registration card or an original of their birth certificate in order to prove U.S. citizenship. A tourist visa also is required to enter Mexico. Tourist cards are available through any consulate, travel agent, or at airline counters at the airport. Non-U.S. citizens should check with a Mexican consulate.
Students will receive a refund of one half the program balance if they withdraw by Friday, May 30, 1997. Students who cancel after this date are not eligible to receive a refund.
