Saturday, November 4, 2000 "Creolization in the Academy and the Community" Symposium
10:00am: J. Michael Dash (NYU),
"Stories Without End: Creolization and the Caribbean." Keynote Address
Location: Room 204, Jones Hall, Tulane University Campus
10:30am - 12:00pm: Panel Discussion, "What is Creole and Creolization? The Cultural Politics of Creole Identity."
Distinguished panelists:
Speakers and Discussants: Tom Klingler (Department of French &
Italian, Tulane University), Sybil Kein (University of Michigan, Creole Scholar and
Writer), Cecile Accilien (Department of French and Italian, Tulane University), Tola
Mosadomi (Foreign Languages Department Head, McGehee Secondary School and African Scholar
and Writer), Dixon Abreu (Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Tulane University), and
Bill Reeves (President, Louisiana Historical Society).

1:00pm-2:00pm: Guided Tours of Haitian Creole Art Exhibit (with supporting materials provided by Tulane Universitys Special Collections Department)
The featured artist and speaker, Ulrick Jean-Pierre will conduct several guided tours of his paintings exhibited in Special Collections' Jones Hall Gallery ( 2nd floor) for the symposium audience before delivering his featured presentation.

Keynote Address
Local Visual Artist Ulrick Jean-Pierre will discuss his
exhibited work and his view of creolization and visual representation.
Location: Room 204, Jones Hall
3:00pm-4:30pm: Round Table Discussion and Workshop
Featured panelists and discussants will join the
keynote speakers, university students, community activists, and secondary school teachers
and students for a moderated discussion and workshop on creolization and the role of the
Academy and the Community in preserving cultural heritages.

4:30pm-5:30pm: Closing Reception
The audience and symposium participants are cordially invited to attend a closing reception. Food and beverages will be provided.
