The graduate students in the Department of French and Italian and ISN invite you to participate in our Spring 2000 symposium on issues key to the graduate experience.  In addition to 3 workshops, we have an ongoing VIRTUAL component to this symposium in the form of an archive of documents and a discussion board.   Join us on line and in person to discuss what matters most to YOU!

April Workshop

The Job Search:  How to Market Yourself

Friday, April 7, 12-2pm, Newcomb Faculty Lounge (Room 114) Newcomb Hall  Discussion moderated by Katherine Gracki (Department of French and Italian).

Featured panelists include Dr. Erec Koch (Professor of French and Associate Dean of Paul Tulane College), Lesley Reid (Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Sociology), Dr. Richard Watts (Professor of French), Laura Barbas Rhoden (Ph.D. Candidate in Spanish and Portuguese), John Dudley (Ph.D. Candidate in  English), and Dr. Deborah  McGrady (Professor of French).

This event will focus specifically on the pragmatic issue of graduate student marketibility.  Issues to be raised include:

  • how to prepare for academic AND non-academic jobs

  • postdoctoral opportunities

  • preparing supporting materials/dossier

  • interview strategies

  • negotiating job offers (as they pour in...)

We will have some faculty participation to provide advice from across the academic divide and give us an inside look at what future employers want.

A light lunch will be provided.
Contact Katherine Gracki if you'd like to participate or help organize.

A brief 15 minute informational meeting will be held after the event.  Information on ISN membership and on ISN Executive Board membership will be provided.  Elections will be held at this time.  If you would like more information or would like to submit your candidacy, please visit http://www.tulane.edu/~isn/elections2000.htm and/or send mail to kgracki@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu.
