Gilbert

Archive
I have three main favorite operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan.
H.M.S.
Pinafore. Composer: Arthur Sullivan, Thomas Lawlor Conductor:
Simon Phipps, Linda Ormiston Performer: Christopher Gillett, Nickolas
Grace, et al. Label: Jay Records - #1324 Audio CD (July 13, 1999). This
is just about the silliest thing ever -- except for other Gilbert and
Sullivan opperettas. There's a classic double-pair of lovers plot, lots
of great songs, and it all works out in the end...as long as you don't
look at it too closely.
The Mikado, by Gilbert and Sullivan. The son
of the Mikado disguises himself as a second trombone to evade the matrimonial
clutches of a woman who's "something awful." Meanwhile, a
tailor is made the Lord High Executioner...
The Pirates of Penzance relies almost completely on logical tricks...except
for the part about how they're all members of the House of Peers, but
that's not too important because we only find that out at the very end,
and it only gets a couple lines. Besides, I think it's a political joke.
