Mozart Archive

It's simply impossible to play too much Mozart. I've done almost all of his operas on the show. Here are some of my favorites.

The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro). Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Performer: Kiri Te Kanawa, Samuel Ramey, et al. Label: Polygram Records - #410150 Audio CD (March 12, 1984) Number of Discs: 3 ASIN: B0000041OU. It's long and gets a little dull in spots, but this is an exceptional opera, with a scheming maid and a duplicitous Duke and a Duchess who gets the better of her husband by the end. Fabulous arias, particularly at the end!

The Magic Flute (Die Zaubertflöe).Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Conductor: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Performer: Sir Neville Marriner, Kiri Te Kanawa, et al. Label: Polygram Records - #426276 Audio CD (September 12, 1990) Number of Discs: 2 ASIN: B00000412K. This is probably my all-time favorite Mozart opera, with a giant snake, a Queen of the Night who can sing like an angel (even though she isn't one!) and a birdman who finds true love...ahhhhh.

Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Harem). Performer(s): Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, William Christie, Christine Schäfer, Ian Bostridge, Les Arts Florissants, Patricia Petibon, Iain Paton, Alan Ewing, Jurg Löw, Hiro Kurosaki Label: Elektra/Asylum - #25490 Audio CD (May 18, 1999) Number of Discs: 2 ASIN: B00000IWRJ. This is wild, fun and lively opera, one with "too many notes" for some people. Mozart changed the original story by making the villain repent and turn merciful rather than being conquered. There's also a great scene where a Muslim is suduced by a drinking song.

Others I've Played

Zaide. Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Conductor: Sir Colin Davis Performer: Ileana Cotrubas, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, et al. Label: Polygram Records - #422536 Audio CD (November 8, 1991). This early Mozart opera isn't finished, and I don't think Wolfgang was shaving yet, but it's still beautiful!

Bastien und Bastienne, a one-act opera by Wolfgang A. Mozart.

and another one-act, L'Oca Del Cairo

and another one-act, Lo Sposo Deluso.

The opera for Saturday, May 8th, was Wolfgang Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus which isn't very well-known, and isn't his best opera, but is still a heck of a lot better than anything I could ever do.

La Finta Semplice. This is one of Mozart's lesser-known operas (meaning it wasn't in the movie Amadeus), but it still rocks!

Idomeneo is wonderfully empassioned.
