Guiseppe Verdi Archive

Otello, based on Shakespeare's Othello, varies little from the original except in terms of rearranging some of the action to make the story shorter and to emphasize Otello's charisma. The music is lovely, fierce, and sad. Favorite aira is the Willow song.

Don Carlo. You might be more familiar with some of Verdi's more popular operas, like Aida or Rigoletto. Verdi's strengths lie in his ability to reveal the inner torment of the characters through music which is somehow angst-ridden and incredibly beautiful at the same time. How he does it, I have no idea. Maybe it's the beard.

Falstaff concerns Shakespeare's great character and his exploits with women and cowardise, lots of beautiful music, and a lovely libretto. A good time will be had by all.

Verdi's Rigoletto. This is everything an opera should be. There's murder and love and sex and betrayal and horrible, horrible agonizing sorrow -- and really great music too!
