I Dr. Houston Essay #1 Choosing from the first three plays read in class, select either a character or a situation that you feel could be transported "intact" to the year 2003 (ignoring the language). Identify and explain this character/situation, arguing for their/its superior relevance to the world around us as you know it. At some point in your essay, have at least a paragraph on how this relevance could be brought out in a staging of the play. At some point in your essay, have at least a paragraph on whether you think this relevance is "timeless," or particularly apt for 2003. At some point in your essay, have at least a paragraph where you do deal with the language to answer the following question: Does Shakespeare's language help bring out the relevance of the character/situation? Does it obscure it? Is it indifferent to it? The essay should be about 3-4 pages long. It is due Oct. 16. |
